Hanwha blows four late chances, Kim Kyung-moon’s 900th win pushed back again

17-run constipated baseball draws 3-3 with NC

The Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Baseball Organization blew four late chances. They left 17 stranded runners and settled for a draw. Hanwha manager Kim Kyung-moon’s 900th career victory was delayed again.

Hanwha ended its 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League 2024 home game against the NC Dinos in a 3-3 draw after 12 innings of extra innings at Hanwha Life Eagles Park in Daejeon on Monday. It was a 4-hour, 52-minute futile effort that started at 5 p.m. and ended at 9:52 p.m.

Kim Kyung-moon is one win shy of becoming the sixth manager in KBO history with 900 career wins, but the team’s second straight loss in the Daejeon NC on July 7-8 ended in a draw.

The second draw of the season for both teams, following their last meeting against Daejeon NC (5-5) on March 15th. The gap between 6th-ranked NC (30W32L2D2T, .484 winning percentage) and 7th-ranked Hanwha (27W34L2D2T, .443 winning percentage) remained at 2.5 games.

The game started off in Hanwha’s favor. In the bottom of the second inning against NC starter Kyle Hart, leadoff hitter Chae Eun-sung singled through the right side after an eight-pitch at-bat, and then Choi In-ho followed with a double to left-center. Chae Eun-sung was thrown out at home on a wild pitch, and Choi In-ho was replaced by Jang Jin-hyeok with a sore right side, but Lee Won-seok stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third after Choi Jae-hoon singled and Lee Do-yoon grounded out to first.

He swung at a two-seam fastball that was right in the middle of Hart’s first pitch, and hit it to center field. Lee’s RBI single brought home both runners from second and third. Hwang Young-mook followed with an RBI single to left field on Hart’s two-seam slider that was well outside the zone. Lee Won-seok quickly scored from second base to give Hanwha a 3-0 lead.

NC fought back in the top of the third inning. After missing runners on first and third in the first inning and second and third in the second inning against Hanwha’s rookie starter Cho Dong-wook, the team scored a run in the top of the third on a single to center by Park Min-woo and a double to right by Park Gun-woo, followed by a sacrifice fly to right field by Matt Davidson.

Cho pitched four innings, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and one strikeout, but Hanwha called on Han Seung-hyeok to start the fifth inning. With a 3-1 lead, one inning remaining and only 68 pitches to go, Kim decided to “quick-hook” the starter. He left runners on base in every inning, and his pitches were shaking sharply in the fourth inning. He also took into account that NC was batting in the middle of the order in the fifth inning.

Kim’s knife-like pitching changes were successful until the seventh inning. Han Seung-hyuk in the fifth and Kim Kyu-yeon in the sixth pitched one 먹튀검증 inning each without allowing an earned run. Park Sang-won, who came on in the seventh inning and retired the side in order in the eighth inning, was hit by an eight-pitch walk to Do Tae-hoon with one out, prompting Kim to bring in his closer, Joo Hyun-hyun, early. Joo, who has no five-out saves this season, showed his determination to win the game.

After striking out the first batter, Kim Hyung-joon, on a curveball, Joo gave up a tying two-run home run to Kim Joo-won. Joo’s second pitch, a 147-kilometer-per-hour fastball, was on the body, but Kim took it well, sending it over the right-field fence. It traveled 115 meters and was his fifth home run of the season. Joo Hyun-sang blew his second blown save of the season, but he didn’t allow another run until the ninth inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Hanhwa had a chance to end the game. With one out, Moon Hyun-bin, who pinch-hit for Euros, hit a double to right-center off NC pitcher Kim Jae-yeol. Then, when Noh Si-hwan was hit by 1-3 pitches in a row, NC loaded the bases with an automatic double play, but back-to-back strikeouts by Chae Eun-sung and Jang Jin-hyeok at first and second wasted the chance to end the inning. NC’s Kim Jae-yeol threw a low fastball to Chae Eun-sung for a strikeout and then induced three consecutive forked swings on two balls to Jang Jin-hyeok to end the threat.

Hanwha had a chance to close out the game in the top of the 10th after Jang gave up a single and a walk to start the inning. Against NC reliever Han Jae-seung, leadoff hitter Choi Jae-hoon walked on a full count. The speedy Ha Joo-seok pinch-hit and Lee Do-yoon grounded to third base. Ha, who started on a full count, stole second and advanced to third.

With the tying run in scoring position, Hanwha had runners on first and second when Lee Won-seok hit a grounder to third and NC third baseman Kim Joo-won made a throwing error. The pitch was fast, but it was not a hard-hit ball that could not be caught. Hanwha 카지노사이트 capitalized on the error, but Hwang Young-mook struck out swinging and Kim Tae-yeon grounded out to third to end the threat.

But after Jang Si-hwan got Davidson to ground out to shortstop with runners on second and third in the top of the 11th inning to end a two-hit shutout, the Giants had another chance to close it out in the bottom of the 11th. Against NC reliever Bae Jae-hwan, leadoff hitter Moon Hyun-bin drew a walk to load the bases. Noh flied out to center field, but Moon stole second. Chae Eun-sung followed with an automatic double, but Jang Jin-hyuk grounded out to first base to end the inning.

In the top of the 12th, left-hander Kim Bum-soo got Kim Joo-won to ground out to shortstop Do-yoon Lee on a nine-pitch at-bat to end the inning with runners on second and third. After erasing the possibility of defeat, Hanwha had one last chance in the bottom of the 12th. Lee Do-yoon led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lee Won-seok. Hwang Young-mook struck out swinging and Kim Tae-yeon was caught on a fly ball to center field, ending the 4-hour, 52-minute game.

It was a more disappointing game for Hanwha, who tied the game but left a whopping 17 runs on the board. Hwang Young-mook had three hits, Ahn Chi-hong, Chae Eun-sung, and Lee Won-seok had two hits apiece, and the offense managed just three runs despite striking out 20 times with 13 hits and seven walks. NC also managed just three runs on 11 hits and eight walks, including three hits from Park Gun-woo and two each from Park Min-woo and Do Tae-hoon. The lack of cohesion was evident in the 15 stranded runners.
