“I will definitely pass the general public practical test”

“I don’t think I have anything to lose compared to my competitors. I will make the best use of my defense and speed, which I am most confident in, to pass the general public skills test.”

Hwang Young-chan (178 cm, G), a graduate of Kyung Hee University, was selected in the KBL rookie draft last year. He decided to try again and is currently preparing for the second draft because he has a strong desire to become a professional player.

Seonseung Kwan Gymnasium on Kyung Hee University’s International Campus, where the KUSF 2024 KU Basketball U-League game between Kyung Hee University and Dongguk University was held on March 25th. Hwang visited his alma mater, Kyunghee University, 안전한 파워볼사이트 and watched the juniors play from the stands.

“From December to July last year, I went down to my home town of Yeosu to train with Yeosu Hwayang High School, and then I came back up to Suwon to train with Coach Park Chan-sung’s professional academy and Kyunghee University. “At the academy, I’m focusing on offensive and technical aspects, and at school, I’m training to maximize my defense, which is my strength, while participating in team drills,” he said.

With the 2024 KBL Rookie Draft closing on Oct. 20, Hwang will have to pass a paperwork screening and undergo a public skills test to be eligible for the final draft. The physical test is scheduled for Oct. 16. The tryouts and draft will be held on Nov. 15.

However, this year, the competition for the public skills test is expected to be stiffer than ever, as players from the Turnover Project and mixed-race players will be participating.

Before discussing the success of the draft, it’s important to pass the public skills test gateway. “There are a lot of former players, Jung Sung-jo, who is active in turnovers and 3×3, and overseas mixed-race players (Ahn Isaiah and Isaiah Hellman),” said Hwang Young-chan. ”I think the competition will be fierce, but I’m confident. I don’t think I have anything to lose compared to my competitors. I will definitely pass the general public practical test by making good use of my defense and speed, which I am most confident in,” he said.

At Kyung Hee University, Hwang Young-chan was a guard with distinct strengths and weaknesses. He was one of the best in his position in terms of defense and activity, but he had a fatal weakness: his outside shot. Some professional scouts also pointed out that Hwang’s shooting was the reason why he was not selected as a pro. As a student at Kyung Hee University, Hwang shot 29.2% (27/92) from three-point range.

“I’m well aware that I’m being criticized. I’ve been practicing a lot to improve my shooting. I want to show that I’m not just a player who can’t shoot during the tryouts.”

It’s not often that a player gets drafted after trying out again. However, there are cases of players who try out again and pass. Among Kyung Hee University players, Kim Jung-yeon (formerly of E-Land) and Kim Jun-hwan (KT) are representative.

Hwang Young-chan says, “(Kim) Jung-yeon and (Kim) Jun-hwan are both older brothers who did well in college. I think I’m challenging myself one more time, and if I don’t give up hope and show my strengths like my older brothers, I think I can get another chance,” said Hwang.

“I often keep in touch with Coach Kim Woo-ram, who has left the company, and he gives me a lot of helpful advice, such as, ‘When you go to the draft, it’s important to be confident and stand out from other players,’” he said, sharing some of the advice he received.

There were about three weeks until the practical test and about a month and a half until the draft. That’s why every day is even more precious for Hwang.

“I try not to be nervous, but the closer the date gets, the more nervous I get. That makes me prepare even more urgently.” ”It’s the last challenge. If a professional team picks me, I will prepare well for the rest of the season so that they won’t regret picking me.”
