The International Team bounced back with five wins on the second day of the Presidents Cup, the men’s golf competition between the United States and the International Team, following a strong performance by South Korean players.
The International Team won all five of its foursomes matches on the second day of the 2024 Presidents Cup at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada, on Monday (Sept. 28).
The clean sweep evened the two-day total at 5-5 after losing all five matches in the previous day’s four-ball matches.
In the Presidents’ Cup, which will run through 2022, the United States has a commanding 12-1 record in the 14 editions of the tournament, including a nine-match winning streak dating back to 2005.
On the first day of the tournament, the United States swept the five foursomes matches to open the door to a 10th consecutive title, but on the second day, the international teams turned the tide and gave the United States a chance to win its first title in 26 years, since 1998.
South Korean players were at the center of it all.
Kim Si-woo and Byung-hoon Ahn led the way for the International team, defeating the group containing World No. 1 Scottie Schauffler by one hole.
Against Schaeffler and Russell Henry, who defeated Kim Joo-hyung and Lim Sung-jae on the first day, Kim Siu and An Byung-hoon broke the deadlock on the 13th hole (par-3) when Kim hit his tee shot to within 90 centimeters of the hole for birdie.
On the final 18th hole (par-4), Kim sank a par putt from nearly 5 meters to secure the victory.
Sungjae Lim teamed up with Japanese ace Hideki Matsuyama to take the lead against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele from the first hole and never relinquished it, winning by seven with six holes remaining.
It ties for the largest margin of victory in Presidents Cup history and ranks third all-time.
In 2011, South Korean “legend” Kyung-Joo Choi paired with Adam Scott (AUS) in a foursomes match to defeat a group that included “golf’s emperor” Tiger Woods in a 12-hole match, while David Frost (SOU) defeated Kenny Perry (USA) by the same margin in a singles match in 1996.
In other matches, Corey Connors-Mackenzie Hughes (CAN) defeated Wyndham Clarke-Tony Finau by six holes and Scott-Taylor Pendrys (CAN) beat Sahis Sigala-Kolin Morikawa by five.
Christian Bezawidenhout (South Africa)-Jason Day (Australia) defeated Max Homa-Brian Harman by one hole.
Fourball and foursomes will be played on the 29th.
In the four-ball matches, Kim Si-woo and Kim Joo-hyung will team up to take on Keegan Bradley and Clarke, while Lim Sung-jae will be paired with Matsuyama again to face Cantlay and Sam Burns. 메이저사이트
