Last season, Suwon Samsung suffered its first demotion since its foundation. With eight wins, nine draws, and 21 losses, it was the lowest among the 12 teams. It was a fall of a prestigious family that earned the honor of winning four league titles and five FA Cups.

The anger of Suwon Samsung fans, who were the second most desperate in the K-League, was also at its peak. They blocked team buses and demanded dialogue, and called for reform of the entire team.

The team also expressed regret and gratitude to the fans at the same time. “Our fans always visited us both at home and away despite our poor performance last season,” foreign striker Mulic said ahead of the opening ceremony. “Thank you and sorry for your support until the last round.”

Kim Sang-joon also expressed his determination, saying, “We received great concern and ridicule as the team called Suwon Samsung was relegated,” adding, “Our goal is to find our place and we want to create a year where we can receive applause from fans.”

In the meantime, the season’s opening is approaching, and Suwon Samsung announced its start in the unfamiliar K-League 2. The stage changed, but Suwon Samsung fans’ enthusiastic support remained the same. They cheered for the team up even before the game, and after winning, they felt even stronger.

There were 14,196 spectators at Suwon World Cup Stadium on the same day. According to the Korea Professional Football Federation, it was the record for the most spectators in a single K-League 2 game since the introduction of paid spectators in 2018. It surpassed last season’s Busan I’Park-Bucheon FC (13,340 people).

Suwon Samsung, which received enthusiastic support from its fans, also rewarded it with a victory in the opening game. Suwon Samsung took the lead with Mulic scoring the first goal after receiving Lee Sang-min’s pass in the 21st minute of the first half. Suwon Samsung soon faced a crisis. Cho Yoon-sung, who cut off Juninho’s breakthrough in the 40th minute of the first half, was sent off directly.

Then, Mulic came out as a solver again. Mulic opened the gap by scoring an additional goal with a free kick in the first half.

Suwon Samsung allowed Jeong Ma-ho to chase after the latter by allowing a run in the 24th minute of the second half. However, despite being outnumbered by a single goal, Suwon Samsung enjoyed the joy of its first win of this season.

Mulic, who became the first contributor to the victory, said, “I didn’t do it alone, but I fought as a team with my teammates,” adding, “I think it would be good to go in this direction in the future.”

Coach Yeom Ki-hoon said, “I think we got off to a good start thanks to the fans who supported us a lot,” adding, “Honestly, I don’t think even 50% came out, but I think we can make preparations in the next game.”
